Fear cripples us.
Fear of the unknown,
Of not being good enough ….
Over the weekend, we went on a quick trip for a wedding, by flight.
Even though she had flown numerous times before, it had been over a year since her last flight and she was only two at the time. Since then, she has become more aware of her surroundings and her imagination has expanded to include the “shadows” and the “monsters”.
Before the take off, she looked at us and warned us, “I might be scared”.
Then when the flight took off, I saw a bit of panic on her face, likely triggered by the overwhelmingly loud noise of the engine.
With an assuring hold of my palm on her tiny chest, she leaned back onto her seat, looked out the window, took a deep breathe, and became calm. She was unfazed by the flight, even proceeded to fall asleep, and slept through the somewhat violent landing.
On our return flight, when we were entereding the airplane, she led us through the hallway saying out loud, “I am NOT afraid” again and again.
This was her mantra and reminder, maybe more for herself than us. She had the extra hop in her steps, full of confidence knowing that she has done this before and she can do it, without fear.
This week, I’m filled with fear.
Of not being good enough.
Of not being perceived as such.
Of not being able to accomplish as much as I need to.
Of not being clear-headed enough to prioritize what is truly important on that massive to do list and get cluttered by the less important things.
But seeing this simple photo reminds me that there is no point of allowing fear to cripple us.
Stay organized, stay confident, and tackle one thing at a time.
And keep in mind and repeat that mantra of “I am NOT afraid”.
